Niacin (Vitamin B3)

Niacin (Nicotinic Acid, Vitamin B3) is a water-soluble B-vitamin that serves as a precursor to the coenzymes NAD⁺ and NADP⁺ — the universal electron carriers in virtually all cellular oxidative and reductive metabolic reactions. At physiological doses it is an essential nutrient; at pharmacological doses (1,000–3,000mg/day) it demonstrates clinically significant effects on blood lipids — raising HDL cholesterol and lowering triglycerides and LDL. The characteristic flushing response (prostaglandin-mediated cutaneous vasodilation) is a dose-dependent effect that can be moderated with slow-release formulations or aspirin pre-dosing.

Key Benefits

  • Precursor to NAD⁺ and NADP⁺ — required cofactors in over 400 metabolic enzyme reactions.
  • At pharmacological doses: raises HDL, lowers triglycerides, and reduces LDL — a lipid management active.
  • Supports healthy skin via promotion of ceramide synthesis in the epidermal barrier.
  • Energy metabolism cofactor — essential in carbohydrate, fat, and protein catabolism.
  • Water-soluble, stable, and globally approved for both food fortification and pharmaceutical use.
