What Is Sodium Hyaluronate?

Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid (HA), a high-molecular-weight glycosaminoglycan consisting of repeating disaccharide units of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine. Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the extracellular matrix, present in particularly high concentrations in synovial fluid (providing lubrication in joints), the vitreous humor of the eye, and the dermis of the skin (where it retains moisture and provides tissue volume). The sodium salt form is the common supplemental and pharmaceutical preparation.

Sodium hyaluronate in supplement contexts is used for skin hydration, anti-aging, and joint comfort positioning. It should not be conflated with injectable HA (used in dermal fillers and intra-articular joint injections), which has a distinct regulatory and clinical framework.

Evidence Note

Skin hydration: Kawada et al. (2015) found that oral ingestion of 120 mg hyaluronic acid daily for 12 weeks significantly improved skin moisture in healthy subjects. Marini et al. (2015) reported improvements in skin hydration parameters with an oral HA and antioxidant supplement formulation over 8 weeks.

Joint comfort: A randomised controlled trial by Tashiro et al. (2012) found that oral administration of 200 mg/day of polymer hyaluronic acid over 12 months significantly reduced knee pain scores in patients with knee osteoarthritis compared to placebo.

Bioavailability caveat: Oral HA undergoes partial degradation in the GI tract, and whether intact high-molecular-weight HA is absorbed systemically or whether degradation products drive the observed effects remains a subject of research. Low-molecular-weight HA fragments may have better GI bioavailability. Claims should reference specific studies and doses rather than asserting mechanisms not yet fully established.
