Category-Specific Considerations

Standard INS-listed food additives: More established clearance pathway — generally straightforward if the additive and use level are listed in FSSAI's Food Products Standards and Food Additives Regulations.

Nutraceuticals and health supplements: Governed by FSSAI's Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, FSDU, FSMPU, Functional Food and Novel Food Regulations (2022), with specific permitted ingredient schedules, compositional limits, and label claim restrictions. Always confirm your specific ingredient appears on the current permitted list for the intended category.

Novel ingredients: Not covered by existing FSSAI standards — require prior FSSAI approval before commercial import.

• FSSAI-compliant documentation for the specific ingredient and intended use category
• Batch-level Certificate of Analysis from an accredited laboratory
• Country of origin confirmation per shipment

Buyer Checklist

• FSSAI FBO licence or registration is current and valid for the import category
• Ingredient confirmed on FSSAI permitted list for its intended use (food additive / nutraceutical / health supplement)
• Batch COA requested from supplier in advance of shipment
• Country of origin documentation confirmed
• Label compliance confirmed for finished product
• Regulatory consultant engaged for complex categories (novel food, health supplements)
• FSSAI Import Monitoring System (IMS) checked for current application status

Common Mistakes

Assuming FSSAI requirements haven't changed since your last import. Regulations are updated periodically — always verify current requirements against the live FSSAI portal.

Not securing the COA before shipment. Missing, incorrect, or mismatched COAs cause delays at customs — request and verify in advance.

Conflating food additive permits with nutraceutical permits. An ingredient permitted as a food additive is not automatically permitted as a dietary supplement ingredient — these are distinct FSSAI categories.
