Quality Certifications Reference for Bulk Ingredient Buyers
Quick Summary
- Certifications tell you something about a supplier's quality management system — they are not a substitute for a batch-specific COA, but they are meaningful indicators of systemic quality control
- GMP and HACCP are the baseline for any serious food or nutraceutical ingredient supplier
- ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 are internationally recognised food safety management system standards that incorporate HACCP and go further
- Halal and Kosher are religious dietary certifications — confirm whether your customers or export markets require them
Core Quality Certifications Explained
### GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)
GMP is the foundation of quality assurance for food and pharmaceutical manufacturing. It specifies minimum requirements for facilities, equipment, personnel hygiene, production processes, quality control, and documentation to ensure products consistently meet identity, purity, potency, and quality specifications. GMP compliance is typically verified by regulatory authority inspection (e.g. US FDA, EU competent authority) or by recognised third-party certification.
For nutraceutical ingredient suppliers, NSF International's GMP Registration and NPA GMP certification are commonly recognised in the US market; EU/Indian suppliers may reference local regulatory authority approvals.
### HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)
HACCP is a systematic approach to food safety that identifies, evaluates, and controls biological, chemical, and physical hazards at critical points in the production process. It is a prerequisite for ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000. Many regulatory authorities, including FSSAI, require HACCP-based food safety plans for food businesses.
### ISO 22000
An international standard for food safety management systems (FSMS). It integrates HACCP principles with general food hygiene requirements and management system elements (similar in structure to ISO 9001). ISO 22000 certification can be held by any organisation in the food supply chain — manufacturer, logistics, packaging supplier. It is not specific to nutraceuticals but provides broad food safety system assurance.
### FSSC 22000
A widely recognised food safety scheme that combines ISO 22000 with sector-specific prerequisite programmes (PRPs) and additional FSSC requirements. FSSC 22000 is recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and is commonly required by major retailers and food manufacturers as a supplier qualification standard. It is stricter and more comprehensive than ISO 22000 alone.
### Halal Certification
Halal certification confirms that a product and its production process comply with Islamic dietary law — primarily: no pork-derived ingredients, no alcohol in processing, no cross-contamination with non-Halal materials, and humane slaughter practices where animal-derived materials are involved. Relevant for any ingredient of animal origin (fish collagen, dairy proteins, gelatin) and for fermentation-produced ingredients where the growth media and processing aids matter. Required for export to Muslim-majority markets (Middle East, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc.).
### Kosher Certification
Kosher certification confirms compliance with Jewish dietary law (Kashrut). Key requirements for ingredients: no pork or non-kosher animal-derived materials, separation of meat and dairy ("Pareve" for a product that is neither meat nor dairy), and supervision of production. Required for products sold in markets with significant Jewish consumer bases (USA, Israel, parts of Europe).
