FSSAI Compliance Basics for B2B Ingredient Buyers in India

Share

Quick Summary

  • FSSAI administers food safety under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006
  • Three main regulatory categories relevant to ingredient buyers: food additives, nutraceuticals/health supplements, novel foods
  • Compliance responsibility is split between supplier (ingredient documentation) and food business operator (licence, finished product, manufacturing)
  • Current FSSAI portal (fssai.gov.in) is the authoritative source — always verify before new import programmes

FSSAI's Regulatory Structure for Ingredient Buyers

1. Food Products Standards and Food Additives Regulations Covers permitted food additives by INS number — colours, preservatives, antioxidants, emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners, flavour enhancers. If your ingredient is listed with a permitted use level for your food category, the clearance pathway is relatively straightforward.

2. Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals and Novel Foods Regulations (2022) The most complex and frequently updated category for the nutraceutical sector. Governs what can be used in dietary supplements, permitted claim types, maximum levels per daily dose, and labeling format. Confirm your ingredient appears on the current permitted ingredient schedule before importing.

3. Novel Food Provisions Ingredients not covered by existing FSSAI standards require prior FSSAI approval before commercial use in India — a significantly longer process than standard clearance.
