JECFA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives)
An international scientific expert committee that evaluates the safety of food additives, contaminants, naturally occurring toxicants, and residues of veterinary drugs in food. JECFA establishes ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) values and maximum residue limits used by the Codex Alimentarius Commission and national food regulators worldwide. When a food additive has received a JECFA ADI of "not specified," it indicates the highest safety classification — safe at levels required for its intended functional effect without a numeric upper limit.
