What Is Taurine?

Taurine is a sulfur-containing compound found in high concentrations in heart muscle, skeletal muscle, brain, and retina. Despite being classified alongside amino acids in supplement contexts, it is technically a sulfonic acid — it has a sulfonate group rather than the carboxylate group of true amino acids, and it is not incorporated into proteins. The body synthesises it from cysteine and methionine; dietary intake from meat and fish supplements endogenous production.

In food manufacturing, taurine is near-universal in energy drinks and widely used in pre-workout and cardiovascular health supplements.

Regulatory Context

EFSA's Scientific Committee reviewed taurine as part of its energy drink ingredient assessment and concluded that up to 3 g/day raises no safety concerns for the general adult population, and that taurine is unlikely to interact adversely with caffeine at typical energy drink concentrations. Energy drink formulations in India face specific FSSAI category regulations — always verify with a regulatory expert before launching.
