Quick Summary

  • Category: Amino Acid · Sourcing Origin: China · Form: Powder · Standard Pack Size: 25 kg
  • The simplest amino acid — non-essential, synthesised from serine; serves as a precursor to collagen, glutathione, creatine, and bile acids
  • Mildly sweet taste; readily water-soluble
  • Evidence: role in sleep quality (Bannai & Kawai, 2012); collagen formation (as part of Gly-X-Y tripeptide repeating sequence); inhibitory neurotransmitter in brainstem and spinal cord

What Is Glycine?

Glycine is the simplest of the 20 standard amino acids — it has a single hydrogen atom as its side chain (R-group), making it the only amino acid without a chiral centre. It is non-essential under normal physiological conditions (synthesised from serine by serine hydroxymethyltransferase) and serves as a precursor to several important compounds: collagen (where glycine occupies every third position in the Gly-X-Y tripeptide sequence), reduced glutathione (alongside cysteine and glutamate), creatine (alongside arginine and methionine), and bile acids. It also functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brainstem and spinal cord via the glycine receptor.

How It's Sourced

YNP Ingredients sources Glycine from certified manufacturers in China, supplied with FSSAI-compliant documentation.

Applications

  • Collagen support formulations (as a standalone supplement or paired with proline and hydroxyproline sources)
  • Sleep quality and relaxation supplements (3 g doses studied for sleep improvement)
  • Glutathione precursor blends (alongside L-Cysteine and L-Glutamine/L-Glutamate)
  • Joint and connective tissue support products
  • Flavour masking and mouthfeel improvement in amino acid supplement blends (where its mild sweetness balances bitter amino acids)
  • Meat flavour applications in seasoning (glycine contributes to umami and sweetness balance)

Industries Served

Sports Nutrition · Nutraceuticals/Dietary Supplements · Functional Food/Beverage · Seasoning & Snack

Buyer Checklist

  • Confirmed intended application before finalising label claims
  • COA confirming purity (pharmaceutical or food grade as required)
  • FSSAI-compliant documentation confirmed
  • 25 kg pack size and MOQ confirmed

Common Mistakes

Confusing glycine's role in collagen formation with direct collagen supplementation. Glycine is a substrate for endogenous collagen synthesis, but this is not the same as taking hydrolysed collagen peptides (Section 22). Both may be relevant to a collagen support product, but they work by different mechanisms.

Overstating sleep claims beyond what the evidence supports. The Bannai & Kawai (2012) study found significant improvements in sleep quality outcomes with 3 g glycine before bed — but this is a single study; extrapolating broadly requires care.
