Heavy Metals — The Non-Negotiable COA Requirement

For both ingredients, but especially for Fish Collagen Peptide, the COA must include a full heavy metals panel. As established in the Heavy Metals Testing Guide (Section 83):

  • Mercury: Most important for fish-derived ingredients. Both methylmercury (organic, toxic) and total mercury should be confirmed. JECFA PTWI for methylmercury: 1.6 μg/kg body weight per week.
  • Inorganic arsenic: Must be reported separately from total arsenic. Marine ingredients naturally contain high organic arsenic (arsenobetaine, largely non-toxic) — total arsenic values appear high for fish-derived products, but it is the inorganic arsenic fraction that is the toxicological concern.
  • Lead and Cadmium: Confirm limits are within JECFA/EFSA/FDA applicable standards.

Do not accept a COA for marine collagen that reports only total arsenic without specifying inorganic arsenic separately.

Molecular Weight Specification for Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium hyaluronate is available in a range of molecular weight grades:

  • High molecular weight HA (>1,000 kDa): Native or lightly processed form. Excellent viscosity in solution. May have limited GI absorption at very high MW — large molecules may be partially degraded before absorption.
  • Medium molecular weight HA (100–1,000 kDa): Balances functional viscosity with improved GI processability.
  • Low molecular weight HA (<100 kDa): Better candidate for absorption via GI tract in intact or near-intact form; some research suggests better bioavailability for joint and skin effects; may have different biological activity than high MW.

Confirm the molecular weight range on the COA and ensure it matches the grade for which your chosen clinical reference studies were conducted.
