What a COA Is (and Isn't)

Core Sections of a Typical COA

Identity and batch information. The ingredient name, batch/lot number, manufacturing date, and (where applicable) expiry or retest date. Cross-check the batch number here against the number physically printed on the bag, drum, or carton you receive.

Assay/potency. The measured concentration of the active component — protein percentage for a protein ingredient, active compound percentage for an amino acid or vitamin, and so on. This is the number that determines whether the batch actually matches what you ordered (e.g. confirming an 80%-protein WPC batch genuinely tests at or above 80%).

Physical characteristics. Appearance, particle size, moisture content, solubility, and similar attributes relevant to how the ingredient will perform in your formulation process.

Microbial limits. Total plate count, yeast and mold, and pathogen testing (e.g. Salmonella, E. coli) relevant to food-grade and nutraceutical-grade ingredients.

Heavy metals and contaminants. Testing for lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury, along with any category-specific contaminant testing relevant to the ingredient.

Regulatory/compliance markers. FSSAI-relevant documentation, where applicable, supporting import and use within India.

What to Do If a COA Looks Incomplete

Don't assume an incomplete COA is a clerical oversight — ask directly which specific tests were and weren't performed on the batch, and why. A supplier with a robust quality program should be able to answer this immediately; hesitation or vagueness here is one of the more reliable early signals of a sourcing relationship worth reconsidering.

Buyer Checklist

  • Confirmed the COA's batch/lot number matches the physical shipment
  • Confirmed assay/potency meets the specification you ordered, not just a "typical value"
  • Reviewed microbial and heavy metal testing relevant to your application
  • Asked directly about any sections that appear missing or generic rather than batch-specific

Common Mistakes

Treating a generic spec sheet as a COA. They serve different purposes — a spec sheet describes the product category, a COA reports the actual batch.
