L-Tyrosine

Quick Summary

  • Category: Amino Acid · Sourcing Origin: China · Form: Powder · Standard Pack Size: 25 kg
  • Non-essential under normal conditions (synthesised from phenylalanine); conditionally essential in phenylketonuria (PKU)
  • Precursor to dopamine, norepinephrine, epinephrine (catecholamines) and thyroid hormones (T3, T4)
  • Evidence supports cognitive performance benefits under acute stress; evidence for baseline cognitive enhancement in non-stressed individuals is weaker

What Is L-Tyrosine?

L-Tyrosine is a non-essential aromatic amino acid produced in the body by hydroxylation of phenylalanine. Its significance in supplement formulation lies in its role as the precursor to the catecholamine neurotransmitters: tyrosine → L-DOPA → dopamine → norepinephrine → epinephrine. It is also the precursor to thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) and to melanin (skin and hair pigment).

Supplements containing L-Tyrosine are most commonly positioned for cognitive performance, focus, or stress adaptation — functions related to catecholamine availability. The research suggests that tyrosine supplementation is most effective in situations where catecholamine synthesis is being outpaced by demand (i.e. under conditions of cognitive or physical stress), rather than as a general cognitive enhancer for non-stressed individuals.

Note for PKU: In phenylketonuria, the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase is defective or absent. This means tyrosine cannot be synthesised from phenylalanine, making L-Tyrosine an essential dietary amino acid for PKU patients — a relevant context when formulating products intended for clinical or medical nutrition applications.

Evidence Note

A systematic review by Jongkees et al. (2015) — covering 15 controlled studies — found that L-Tyrosine supplementation produced beneficial effects on cognitively demanding tasks, particularly under conditions of cold stress, sleep deprivation, or multitasking demands. Benefits were less consistent in non-stressed, baseline conditions. A study by Colzato et al. (2013) specifically found that a single tyrosine dose improved working memory updating performance compared to placebo. Claim language should reflect the stress-dependent nature of the evidence rather than suggesting universal cognitive enhancement.

Buyer Checklist

  • Confirmed application and appropriate label claim framing (stress-context evidence vs general cognitive claims)
  • Confirmed low solubility is compatible with your formulation format (may require specific processing for beverage applications)
  • COA confirming purity
  • FSSAI-compliant documentation confirmed
  • 25 kg pack size and MOQ confirmed

Common Mistakes

Overstating "brain booster" claims beyond what the evidence supports. The tyrosine evidence is specifically strongest under cognitive or physical stress conditions — avoid implying universal cognitive enhancement in well-rested, non-stressed individuals.

Overlooking solubility in beverage applications. L-Tyrosine is only sparingly soluble in water at neutral pH — if formulating into a beverage, this requires attention to processing conditions or the use of a more soluble derivative.
