What Is L-Arginine?
L-Arginine is a conditionally essential amino acid involved in multiple metabolic pathways. Most relevantly for supplement formulation, it serves as the substrate for nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes, which produce nitric oxide — a vasodilator that regulates blood vessel tone and blood flow. It is also a precursor to creatine (synthesised with glycine and methionine in the kidneys), to proline (for collagen production), and to urea (cleared in the urea cycle).
Two forms, one molecule: L-Arginine Base is the free amino acid form, providing more L-Arginine per gram. L-Arginine HCl is the hydrochloride salt — more stable in formulation, easier to handle, and the form used in most clinical research.
Important distinction from L-Citrulline: As established in Section 26, L-Arginine undergoes significant first-pass metabolism in the gut and liver. L-Citrulline, converted to L-Arginine in the kidneys, raises plasma arginine levels more reliably than direct arginine supplementation at equivalent doses.
